Online autism assessment: compare providers

Where to get an autism evaluation online, what it costs with and without insurance, and which provider fits you or your child.

The short answer

An online autism assessment is a diagnostic evaluation done over secure video, usually with questionnaires you complete at home first. On this page, evaluations are run by licensed psychologists or, for young children, board-certified pediatricians. With insurance, Prosper Health says most adults pay less than $80, and Emora Health reports an average of $70. Self-pay prices we found range from $590 to $3,200. Most take a few days to a few weeks from first visit to results.

Not sure if it's autism, ADHD or both?

Autism, ADHD and anxiety can look alike and often occur together. If you are not sure which explains what you or your child experience, a combined evaluation looks at more than one condition in the same process.

These providers assess autism and ADHD in one evaluation:

Insurance or self-pay?

For most people with insurance, an in-network evaluation often costs less than paying yourself. Prosper Health and Emora Health report typical costs under $80 with insurance.

Self-pay can make sense if your plan does not cover the evaluation, you have a high deductible you will not meet, you want a fixed price before you start, or you want an assessment sooner.

Before you book, ask your insurer whether a telehealth diagnostic evaluation is covered and whether you need prior authorization.

What you get: a letter or a full report

A diagnostic letter states the diagnosis. A full report also explains how the clinician reached it, with findings and recommendations.

Schools, employers and prescribers set their own documentation rules. Sachs Center notes that the receiving organization decides whether a request is approved, so check what they need before you choose.

When online assessment may not be enough

Online assessment does not suit everyone. Very young children, people who do not use spoken language, and complex cases may need an in-person or broader neuropsychological evaluation. Providers say so directly:

  • Prosper Health: “non-speaking or unable to report your internal states and history”
  • Emora Health: “very young children may need a hybrid in-person component”
  • Sachs Center: “No assessment format can guarantee a diagnosis or a particular outcome.”
